Blackface, Really!

I have no idea what he is saying and it really does not matter, Black face was not necessary. This is something that often strikes me as funny and perplexing when it comes to other races and ethnicities and their mocking of black skin. Obama's complexion is probably very similar to the news anchors natural complexion yet he felt the need to dramatically darken his skin to represent Blackness. In the case ofSparkle Rai a few years ago an Indian man hired a man to kill his black daughter in law. The father in law and son were multiple shades darker than Sparkle. The fact that Sparkle was black any shade of black was enough to result in a contract for her murder. That is why I think colorism is so completely useless and divisive in ethnic communities because even if you are light bright next to white you are still black as a spade to some. Simply because we carry the label of black that automactically encites fear, loathing, and caution in some. .Why? And for those with the school of thought that racism is all but dead, don't believe the hype

 

Tavis Smiley: Financial Empowerment Part II

During the Nationwide Tour with Tavis Smiley I was granted personal time with Tavis Smiley and Jasmine Green of Nationwide.

Tavis’s response to new media at times was flattering and on the other end pointed out the problems with the blogosphere.

New media is phenomenal and I am using it myself I like it because it is a way to get information out instantly, it is a way to talk to a burgeoning group of people who are getting connected. The Obama campaign used the internet remarkably well; in ways I could never imagine ….

I like the new media I like the blogosphere but what I don’t like is there is no fact checking. Everyone has an opinion and because you have a blog you can put your opinion out there. What happens in the world we live in too much of what is opinion ends up taken as fact and that is not the best thing.

We also have to make sure that we are earnest and responsible.


Tavis's response to how to obtain traditional wealth was good common practical sense that too few follow:


Young people have to develop a money philosophy at a young age that is lasting. You cannot spend money you don’t have, stop buying stuff you don’t need to impress folk you don’t like.



Jasmine Green the Vice President Chief Customer Advocate at Nationwide


Jasmine Green response to the hardest aspect of getting minorities to seek financial stability was tempered by the overwhelming financial crunch people are facing. She stated:

Their own personal financial issues with people being out of work they have issues of not being able to afford home or car insurance. One thing I want to stress is it is crucial and vital to get insurance because the last thing you want to do is have a terrible event happen and you are not insured. We as a community may not have the annuities but we need to have the basic coverage. The basics will help us to avoid a crisis.


At the conclusion of the seminar Nationwide provided great breakout sessions to help people learn a starting point comfortable for their current fininical circumstances. The entire event was free in Dallas, Texas provided by Nationwide. Special thanks to Bob Cunningham Public Relations Manager with Nation wide and to Shawn Williams of Dallas South for the name drop.

 

Tavis Smiley: Financial Empowerment Part I

Tavis Smiley came to Dallas this weekend for the conclusion of a five city tour speaking Financial Empowerment to minorities. This talk was fresh off the heels of Barack Obama’s historic run and subsequent win of the Presidency.
Tavis’s talk was speckled with humor and sobriety. Tavis spoke of his friendship with Obama and Obama’s almost pensive acceptance speech on November 4th. He mentioned that the true comparison should not be Obama and Kennedy but Obama and Reagan; because of the overwhelming financial crisis both President’s inherited.


Tavis espoused research that stated this generation of Black Americans would be the first generation that would not do as well as the preceding generation. A depressing, frightening and sober financial prediction for those individuals coming into their adulthood within the next couple of years.

How did this generation arrive in this situation? College students are inundated with credit cards before many of them have settled into their dorm rooms. Parents do not leave any substantial financial legacy for their children. Often children are placed in the difficult position of paying off debts that are not their own. There can be little wonder how this generation of young and often gifted Black Americans find themselves in such distressing financial straits.

At the conclusion of Tavis’s speech I found myself wondering and questioning will the black community respond past November 4th ,will we grab hold of our future , move out of our own way, secure our future through sound investments by leaving a financial legacy, or by refusing to let our skin color define what we cannot accomplish.

Obama's election truly is a movement. I hope people remain involved this is how you change the world.

I have diligently watched the coverage of the Democratic National Convention. I was moved deeply by Michelle Obama’s speech, touched by the authenticity of Hillary Clinton, but nothing compares to how I felt when Barack Obama was officially nominated by acclamation, as the Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.

I am unashamed to admit that I not only cried but wept with abandoned. I wept deeply for my grandfather for this is a day that he thought would never come. Mr. Flax has long been departed from this earthly world, but I believe he knows that the America he grew up in is not the same America. We as a nation have progressed and under the leadership of a President Obama we together will continue a course of progression.

I feel humble, I feel optimistic, and I also feel confident that America is ready for a change ready to move past the debacle of the last eight years to a bigger brighter future. No matter your viewpoint on his policies or your thoughts regarding him personally, history was made this day. August 27, 2008 is a day that will forever remain etched in my mind.

Ms. Mills you don't know Shit! Welcome folks to the realm of idiotcracy and pure unadulterated hateration. Ms. Mills you are the epitome of a bitter self-hating woman. After listening to Hillary speech your dumb ignorant ass could only think of YOURSELF. Your LEADER is calling for party unity and you have the gall to say you don’t know what you are going to do. Lawd have mercy save me from fools. To Steal a phrase from Oliver Willis (Whom I learned about over at Field Negro’s spot) Obama is like Kryptonite to stupid that means you Ms. Mills. I hope your family gives you a warm reception when you return from Denver.

 

The Immigrant Experience and the Black Experience

Past immigrants came to this country seeking refuge from oppressive governments and economic freedom. For many of them they found their American Dream through hard work and education. Today’s immigrants have arrived in America for many of the same reasons. However the genetic makeup of immigrants today has shifted dramatically from solely Caucasians to include a number of people of color and other ethnicities.

I imagine that most immigrants have a very forgiving view of America and an “I’m so happy to be here” (excuse the Coming to America reference) attitude which, they may find it confusing and wonder why Black people have had such a difficult time adjusting.America was our oppressor we had no other country that opened its arms and said come here and begin a better life, no other country to offer economic freedom. America to Black people is what so many immigrants ran from.




America for Black People only became the land of “opportunity” at the end of Jim Crow. So while, immigrants came to this country believing they could do better we have lived in this country hoping to achieve the same. Whereas, immigrants have had family business and the ability to accumulate wealth for decades to pass onto future generations that was not to be the case for the America Negro. We are playing catch up, running a race where the leader is yards ahead. So if my outlook is different than yours please don’t think that I am ungrateful to live in this country just know that I sure as hell don’t feel indebted.

The Great American Equalizer

Education and hard work are the consistent mantra that permeates the essence of the American Dream. Education, as we know, is not created equally nor is it extolled equally. Schools in lower socioeconomic areas are rife with underperforming curriculums, in desperate need of updated teaching materials, and innovated ideas to excite beaten down students to achieve a goal they believe unattainable in the first place.

For many students in lower socioeconomic areas the belief that they have a chance to enter college is surreal. Many struggle with the basics because they are never driven to learn or even taught but rather pushed on to the next level. For those not lost in the public school systems they head off to college earn their degree and look forward to their future. A future, according to the America dream, should grant them privileges and entrance into a new world far from what many of them knew.


Instead, what waits according to data is a closing in income among Black households in comparison to their white counterparts but the glaring disparity arises between white men and black men to the tune of approximately 10,000k with the same degree and experience.


Soledad Obrien mentioned that White men who are ex-cons are more likely to receive a job offer in comparison to black men with an education, because the perception is that black men are lazy and don’t know how to dress properly.


There are no more visible chains and shackles but what remains is far more pervasive, unjustified perceptions and insidious stereotypes that are used as excuses to justify and mask underlining racial prejudices be they conscious or subconscious.

So what then happens when you do everything according to the playbook and you still come up short? How do we keep young Black adults encouraged when they realize the Great American Equalizer is meant for everyone but them?

Why Lie?

“Apparently desperate to distance himself from any affiliation with law enforcement, the rapper Rick Ross has recently denounced as fake photos purporting to show him in a former career as a Florida prison guard. But Department of Corrections (DoC) records show that Ross, whose raps detail the Miami gangster lifestyle and his supposed days trafficking cocaine, did, in fact, work as a correctional officer for 18 months.”


This utter foolishness has to STOP! This fool would rather deny that he had a REAL J-O-B and claim he sold dope. Great example, William Leonard Roberts lets continue to perpetrate the fraudulent rap lifestyle to the detriment of our community. I mean seriously who would rather claim to have a legit job earning a decent living on the right side of the law when, they could claim to be a dope boy. Why Lie!

 

Black Athletes and the Media

There is a big problem, currently with the media portraying black athletes as selfish, money grubbing, self-centered, and egotistical because they want to be paid for their services. Most athletes make decisions that are good for their families, just like every red blooded American. When you work hard and you feel that you are underpaid, then you would ask for a raise or find another job.

When the media see these young black athletes making millions and wanting more, they have a huge problem with this. They always bring up that “athletes should play for the love of the game”. This statement is absurd when it applies to pro athletes. When you played in youth athletic leagues you played for the love of the game, when you played in high school you played for the love of the game, even if you played sports on the college level you played for the love of the game; but as soon as it becomes a career, you will be playing for the money.


I cannot understand why it is hard for the media to accept this fact. If the athlete feels like he or she deserves a raise, then they have every right to ask for one. Why is it a problem only for the black athlete? Is it jealousy, is it subtle racism, or is it like we say in Texas, pure haterism? If the white athlete can ask for extra money without flack from the media, then I do not see a problem with black athletes asking for extra money either. Now, the stuff they do with this money is another story: making it rain , adopting white babies, and receiving a 2 million dollar signing bonus and purchasing a 1.8 million dollar car (folks I'm just saying)

The New Yorker a liberal magazine has decided to grace their cover with what we can only hope will be the future President and First Lady of the United States, to discuss the politics of fear. So what better way to demonstrate the politics of fear than to make rude and crude caricatures of every negative stereotype circling the Obamas.

So let’s lists all of the negative stereotypes:
Michelle Obama
1. Michelle with oversized lips
2. Michelle with Afro hair last time I looked she was silky fine. I am not hating on natural hair I wear my hair naturally
3. Michelle pictured as a black militant
4. Michelle with an attitude

Barack Obama
1. Let’s begin with the obvious he is wearing traditional Muslim garb
2. He is wearing sandals
3. A picture of Osama Bin Laden over the fire place
4. The American flag burning

These images should not only be offensive to Black Americans but to all Americans. This image represents and reinforces every negative image and stereotypes regarding Black Americans, Muslim Americans and how Americans view people of color.

 

Why I hate BET

Black Entertainment Television better known as BETwas created by Bob Johnson. I don’t want to get anything twisted BET was never a paragon of intellectual stimulation however, I don’t remember its past inundated with misogynist videos, rampant foolishness, and overall stupidity. BET is no longer and probably in truth never was a channel for middle black America. The amount of irresponsible garbage that BETuses to pander to the urban youth and curious non-blacks is demeaning and disgraceful.


Reasons Why I hate BET

BET Nightly news no longer part of the line up

Donnie Simpson is no longer a VJ (yeah I know I went back for that one, but he was fine)


Because they broadcast shows like the following:

Lil Kim: Countdown to lock down (Your behind deserved to go to jail; it is time out for the no snitch policy)

Side note don’t do anything around me that you don’t want known because if the cops stop by I’m snitching on EVERYONE! Just keeping it 100.

Do Black women deserved to be known as Strong and Independent

Ok so instead of finishing up a paper I was goofing around on youtube (yeah I know big mistake). I came across several postings regarding black women’s claim to independence and how irritating that is for some men to hear. So I wanted to take time and examine how black women came to be known by the adjectives strong and independent. Please keep in mind these are just my own opinions (I am being lackdasicale and don’t feel up to really doing in depth research)

Circumstance 1. During slavery black women were raped repeatedly sometimes in front of their husbands as another means of dehumanizing the male and weakening the relationship between the black male and female.

Black Woman’s Response 1. The black woman in this situation endures the rape and continues with life, trying to placate an enraged husband who feels helpless and bound by his circumstances.

Circumstance 2. Post-civil war black men are now officially on the grind for a living wage. Black men are met with resistance to their new found freedom, hatred, bigotry, and the need to provide for their families like a man should.

Black Woman’s Response 2. Response to hatred provides the black male with the only respect that he is likely to receive.

Response to bigotry: black woman comforts husband and children provides emotional stability.

Circumstance 3.The break up of the Black family by the following:

A) Lynching an untold number of men lost their lives leaving women and children behind.
Black women: are now placed into the role of sole provider and care-giver
B) Crack cocaine (effected men and women equally) tore families up in the 80s. Grandmothers were left to raise grandchildren.
C) Massive incarceration of black men
Black women once again are left as sole providers and caregivers

This post is in no way meant to denigrate black men but an explanation of how black women have achieved and earned the adjectives of strong and independent. Note I will be doing a future post on women who claim they are independent but actually are not. Also a future post will be coming on the reunification of the black family unit.
