Where were you on August 27, 2008?
I have diligently watched the coverage of the Democratic National Convention. I was moved deeply by Michelle Obama’s speech, touched by the authenticity of Hillary Clinton, but nothing compares to how I felt when Barack Obama was officially nominated by acclamation, as the Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.
I am unashamed to admit that I not only cried but wept with abandoned. I wept deeply for my grandfather for this is a day that he thought would never come. Mr. Flax has long been departed from this earthly world, but I believe he knows that the America he grew up in is not the same America. We as a nation have progressed and under the leadership of a President Obama we together will continue a course of progression.
I feel humble, I feel optimistic, and I also feel confident that America is ready for a change ready to move past the debacle of the last eight years to a bigger brighter future. No matter your viewpoint on his policies or your thoughts regarding him personally, history was made this day. August 27, 2008 is a day that will forever remain etched in my mind.
"You Know That Was a Presidential Speech"
Ms. Mills you don't know Shit! Welcome folks to the realm of idiotcracy and pure unadulterated hateration. Ms. Mills you are the epitome of a bitter self-hating woman. After listening to Hillary speech your dumb ignorant ass could only think of YOURSELF. Your LEADER is calling for party unity and you have the gall to say you don’t know what you are going to do. Lawd have mercy save me from fools. To Steal a phrase from Oliver Willis (Whom I learned about over at Field Negro’s spot) Obama is like Kryptonite to stupid that means you Ms. Mills. I hope your family gives you a warm reception when you return from Denver.
Let me reintroduce myself: My name is Michelle Obama
Caroline Kennedy’s introduction of her Uncle, Ted Kennedy, was an excellent prelude to the dynamic speeches to follow for the remainder of the evening. America has at times a morbid fascination and genuine fascination with the Kennedy family. I remember when JFK Jr. died, that was the beginning of my sophomore year in college, and I was truly saddened and felt that the world had lost a genuine light. When Ted Kennedy took the stage last night and gave his speech whether you like the man or not you had to respect his tenacity and his ability to delivery with temerity a rousing opening for the DNC.
Then the star of the show Michelle Obama took center stage. I am always impressed with her whenever she speaks. I have never felt that she was cold or unfeeling Michelle exudes confidence and strength. If there was ever any doubt to her or Barack’s commitment to this country hopefully those foolish thoughts have been laid to rest. Below are pieces of Michelle’s electrifying speech.
"And you know, what struck me when I first met Barack was that even though he had this funny name, even though he'd grown up all the way across the continent in Hawaii, his family was so much like mine."
"And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and to pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children -- and all children in this nation -- to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."
"And Barack stood up that day, and spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked about "The world as it is" and "The world as it should be." And he said that all too often, we accept the distance between the two, and we settle for the world as it is -- even when it doesn't reflect our values and aspirations. But he reminded us that we also know what our world should look like. He said we know what fairness and justice and opportunity look like. And he urged us to believe in ourselves -- to find the strength within ourselves to strive for the world as it should be. And isn't that the great American story?"
The story of the Obama’s is definitely a story that is only capable in the United States it is one of perseverance and respect. Their evident love for one another and their family commitment are added bonuses that this country would do well to have as our head leadership.
The “Closer”
Michelle Obama will give remarks tonight at the DNC and I can not wait to hear her speech. Mrs. Obama has an electrifying personality one people will instantly withdraw away from or gravitate towards. Many of her statements have been taken out of context and used in a way that paints her as unpatriotic or better yet ungrateful. I understood and still understand Michelle’s often ridiculed statement of being proud of her country for the first time in her adult life. As children we are taught in school from a very young age to love our country to repeat the pledge of allegiance to sing songs of patriotisms but it is the gradual progression into adulthood that begins to show many of us in Black America that our America is not the land of open opportunity or America shrouded in brotherhood from sea to shining sea.
America for me is a place were I often feel uncomfortable. Lately, more and more, it is odd my husband and I have noticed increased stares from white individuals as we are out an about in public. They are truly amazed that he opens my door for me, that he holds my hand or tucks my arm through the crook of his as we walk about. We truly believe that these looks are because the rest of America believes the rampant images of Black people portrayed on television. Michelle and Barack Obama are the reason I am proud to be American they represent my life not John and Cindy McCain. I will probably DVR Michelle’s’ speech so that I can replay it at will.
I'm Back!
I’m back, and there is probably nothing more depressing than the first day of work after returning from vacation. Puerto Rico was fabulous! The rainforest El Yunque was awesome I love hiking and enjoy going to Colorado for that reason but the hike in the rainforest coupled with the humidity kicked our asses. Old San Juan was a gem ate at one of the best restaurants frequented by the locals. I am always adventurous when it comes to food so I had to try the street and roadside vendors and was not disappointed. I hope to have a slide show or a wiki page up by the end of the week.

I Hate the Brazilians!
I hate the Brazilians! I truly do especially around vacation time, Valentines Day, anniversaries and birthdays. Every time I go Yanai says “it will get easier” bullshit, I don’t know what kinda stuff the other ladies are working with but if it is getting easier then they are obviously used to have their lady parts brutalized. I on the other hand will never get used to this ancient (probably originally Chinese) torture method.
I must also admit should anyone want a Brazilian wax for the first time I would suggest visiting a “real” salon that employs specialized aestheticians that only perform waxes and don’t venture from waxing to doing someone’s pedicure (ya’ll know what I’m talking about). The Red Door in Dallas is my spot of choice and it is well worth the price because it’s about the experience and the ambience from the moment you walk in until they strap, I mean, you lay down on the gurney, I mean, waxing table.
As Yanai waxes on and waxes off you would think she is really cutting through a forest just when I think I can’t take it anymore she’s done, but not really. Now comes the fun part TWEEZERS (another ancient original Chinese weapon of torture), Yanai meticiously plucks any left over hairs so that her creation is an utter masterpiece. Now that I’m 70 bucks lighter plus tip I gingerly walk back out to my car and curse myself and the Brazilians again and again, and for what I know I will be making a trip back in October.
Eagerly and Anxiously Awaiting the “Good News”
Much ado about nothing as usual is surrounding Presidential hopeful Barack Obama and his use of text messaging to announce his VP running mate. I personally am elated with the idea of using commonly used technology to spread his much anticipated running mate. I am a text messaging fiend will respond quicker to a text message than the actual ring of the phone. Anywho I guess its no wonder that the haters are out in full force. Truly, is it any wonder when the competitions party refers to “The Google” and “The Internets” that they might find the thought of text messaging a bit daunting.
I do know that the VP candidate will not be Edwards much to my dismay; Edwards embodied a smooth come on over I’m your neighbor let’s have a chat type of vibe. I do know that I Do Not want to see Clinton’s name come across in my inbox or I might have my first official problem with the Obama campaign. Other than that I will happily await the “good news” and eagerly anticipate the flurry of text messages to follow among friends.
